DDR4 stands for Double Data Rate 4, a computer hardware abbreviation.

Fourth generation of DDR memory, standard in PCs and servers from 2014 until DDR5 took over in the early 2020s. It runs at 1.2 volts with JEDEC speeds of 1,600 to 3,200 MT/s, and enthusiast kits run faster.

Example: My AM4 board only supports DDR4, so I'm keeping my 32 GB kit.

Usage notes

Desktop DDR4 modules have 288 pins and laptop SO-DIMMs 260 pins. Intel's 12th to 14th Gen Core processors support either DDR4 or DDR5 depending on the motherboard, while AMD's AM5 platform is DDR5-only. DDR4-3600 with CAS latency 16 was a popular sweet spot for Ryzen gaming builds. Older DDR4 platforms remain popular for budget builds.
