DAS stands for Direct-attached storage, a computer hardware abbreviation.

Storage connected directly to a single computer or server, such as an internal drive, a USB or Thunderbolt external drive, or a multi-bay enclosure, rather than shared over a network.

Example: For 8K editing we use a Thunderbolt DAS, which is faster than reading from the NAS.

Usage notes

DAS offers high performance and simplicity because no network sits between the computer and the disks, but sharing data with other machines is harder. Multi-bay DAS enclosures often support RAID. In data centers, SAS disk shelves cabled to one server are also DAS. The contrast terms are NAS and SAN.
