XLSM stands for Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook, a file format abbreviation.
Excel workbook format that can contain VBA macros, small programs that automate tasks. Because macros can run harmful code, Excel disables them by default and shows a security warning.
Example: The budget template is an XLSM, so click Enable Content to run the import macro.
Usage notes
Since 2022, Microsoft Office blocks macros by default in files downloaded from the internet, a response to years of malware delivered through macro-laden attachments. Users must remove the "mark of the web" through file properties or trusted locations to run them. Saving an XLSM as XLSX strips all macros.
