AAB stands for Android App Bundle, a file format abbreviation.
Publishing format introduced by Google in 2018 in which developers upload all their app's code and resources, and Google Play generates optimized APKs for each device's screen size, processor and language, reducing download sizes.
Example: Build an AAB for the Play Store and a universal APK for testers outside it.
Usage notes
Google made AAB mandatory for new apps on Google Play in August 2021. The model requires Play App Signing, in which Google holds the app's signing key, a point of concern for some developers. AAB files cannot be installed directly on a phone; tools such as bundletool turn them into installable APK sets.
