AIFF stands for Audio Interchange File Format, a file format abbreviation.

Apple's uncompressed audio format, introduced in 1988 and long the standard for audio on Macs, music production and CD mastering. Quality and file size are the same as WAV.

Example: Logic Pro can bounce the mix as AIFF or WAV; either works for the mastering engineer.

Usage notes

AIFF is based on the Interchange File Format created by Electronic Arts in 1985. It stores audio in big-endian byte order, the opposite of WAV. AIFF handles metadata tags such as artist and album art better than WAV, which made it popular for lossless libraries in iTunes. A compressed variant is called AIFF-C.
