VTE stands for Venous thromboembolism, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.
Umbrella term for blood clots in veins, covering deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The CDC estimates that as many as 900,000 Americans are affected each year, and hospitalization, surgery and cancer are leading risk factors.
Example: Hospital VTE risk assessment: Padua score 5, start enoxaparin 40 mg daily prophylaxis.
Usage notes
Clots are classified as provoked (by surgery, immobility or estrogen) or unprovoked, which influences how long anticoagulation continues: typically three months for a provoked clot and often indefinitely for an unprovoked one. Hospitals use risk tools such as Caprini and Padua scores to guide prophylaxis. Cancer patients have several-fold higher VTE risk, and clots may be the first sign of an undiagnosed cancer.
