1. Vital signs stable
Medical · Patient Assessment Abbreviations
Summary phrase stating that a patient's vital signs are within acceptable ranges and have not changed significantly. It appears in progress notes, transfer reports and discharge readiness checklists.
Example: Post-op day 1: VSS, afebrile, pain controlled on oral meds.
"Stable" is a judgment, not a number, so careful notes still list the actual values or a range. A patient can have VSS while still deteriorating in other ways, such as falling urine output or rising lactate. Sometimes written "VSS, AF" to add afebrile.
2. Source supply voltage (Vss)
Science & Engineering · Electronics & Electrical Abbreviations
Label for the negative supply or ground connection of MOSFET and CMOS circuits, named for the source terminals of field-effect transistors. In most single-supply digital circuits Vss is simply 0 volts.
Example: Pin 8 of the chip is Vss and must be tied to the board's ground plane.
In bipolar circuits the equivalent negative rail is Vee. Some analog designs with split supplies use a negative Vss, such as -5 V. Datasheets show Vss alongside Vdd for each power domain.
