Route of temperature measurement in which the thermometer is held in the armpit, recorded as "Ax" after the reading. It is used in newborns, young children and patients who cannot have oral or rectal readings.

Example: Temp 36.4 Ax, swaddled, skin warm, feeding well.

Axillary temperatures generally read lower than core temperature and are less reliable for detecting fever, but they are safe and comfortable. The probe must sit high in the dry armpit with the arm held against the body. Some charts write "AX" or "axill".

2. Åland Islands (AX)

Assigned to the Åland Islands, an autonomous, demilitarized, Swedish-speaking region of Finland in the Baltic Sea, with Mariehamn as its capital and its own .ax domain.

Example: Packages to Mariehamn need AX, not FI, on the customs form because Åland is outside the EU tax area.

Åland issues its own stamps and vehicle plates. Although part of the EU, it is outside the EU VAT area, so goods shipped there need customs paperwork. The alpha-3 code is ALA.
