1. Bilateral lower extremities
Medical · Patient Assessment Abbreviations
Both legs, used in assessment notes for findings like edema, pulses, strength or skin changes that apply to both sides. It saves repeating the finding for each leg.
Example: 2+ pitting edema BLE to mid-shin; legs elevated.
Lower extremity includes the hip, thigh, knee, leg, ankle and foot. Edema in both legs suggests systemic causes such as heart failure, kidney disease or medications, while one-sided swelling raises concern for deep vein thrombosis. Sometimes written B LE.
2. Bluetooth Low Energy
Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations
Power-efficient version of Bluetooth designed for devices that send small amounts of data and run for months or years on coin batteries, such as fitness trackers, smartwatches, beacons, item trackers and medical sensors.
Example: The heart-rate strap connects over BLE, so the battery lasts a year.
BLE began as Nokia's Wibree in 2006 and joined the standard in Bluetooth 4.0 (2010), once marketed as Bluetooth Smart. COVID-19 exposure-notification apps built on Apple and Google's 2020 framework used BLE to detect nearby phones. LE Audio, built on BLE, adds the efficient LC3 codec and Auracast broadcast audio. BLE is not compatible with Classic Bluetooth on its own, though most phones support both.
