1. Virtual power plant
Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations
Network of many distributed energy resources, such as home batteries, EVs, smart thermostats and rooftop solar, coordinated by software to act like a single power plant, supplying power or cutting demand when the grid needs it.
Example: During the heat wave the VPP discharged thousands of home batteries to ease the evening peak.
Tesla and the South Australian government launched a well-known VPP using home solar and batteries in public housing. A 2023 US Department of Energy report estimated VPP capacity could triple to 80-160 gigawatts by 2030. Participants are typically paid per event or receive bill credits.
2. Volts peak-to-peak (Vpp)
Science & Engineering · Electronics & Electrical Abbreviations
Voltage measured from the most negative to the most positive point of a waveform, commonly used to describe AC signals, audio levels, oscillator outputs and ripple on oscilloscopes. A 120 V RMS sine wave measures about 339 Vpp.
Example: The power supply's output ripple measured 40 mV Vpp on the oscilloscope.
Peak-to-peak is twice the peak amplitude for a symmetrical waveform. It is also written Vp-p or V(pp). For non-sinusoidal signals, converting between peak-to-peak and RMS requires knowing the waveform shape.
