1. United States dollar

Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations

The currency of the United States and the world's main reserve and trading currency, held in close to 60 percent of reported central bank reserves and used on one side of almost 90 percent of foreign-exchange trades. It is divided into 100 cents and issued by the Federal Reserve.

Example: The hotel quotes rates in USD, so your card may add a foreign transaction fee.

Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama (alongside its balboa), Timor-Leste and several Pacific nations use the US dollar as their own currency, and many others peg to it. Nicknames include greenback and buck. The $ sign most likely evolved from a scribal abbreviation for the Spanish peso, the "Spanish dollar" that circulated widely in colonial America.

2. Unified school district

Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations

School district, common in California and Kansas, that runs both elementary and high schools under one board, instead of separate elementary and high school districts. Kansas districts are identified by number, as in USD 259.

Example: LAUSD, the Los Angeles Unified School District, is the second-largest district in the country.

California still has some separate elementary and high school districts that feed into each other, so "unified" signals a combined K-12 district. The abbreviation is usually attached to the district name, as in SFUSD or SDUSD. In finance, USD means the US dollar.
