AYP stands for Adequate yearly progress, a K-12 education abbreviation.
Accountability measure under the No Child Left Behind Act that required schools to meet annual targets on state tests for all students and subgroups, aiming for 100 percent proficiency by 2014. Schools that repeatedly missed AYP faced sanctions such as restructuring.
Example: The school failed to make AYP because its special education subgroup missed the reading target.
Usage notes
By 2011 most states received federal waivers because so many schools were missing the targets. The Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 replaced AYP with state-designed accountability systems. The term still appears in older school reports and research.
