U-100 stands for 100 units per milliliter, a drug abbreviation.
Standard insulin concentration in the US and most countries, meaning each milliliter contains 100 units. Standard insulin syringes are calibrated for U-100 insulin, so 1 mL syringe markings read directly in units.
Example: Lantus is U-100; draw up 24 units in a U-100 insulin syringe.
Usage notes
U-100 replaced U-40 and U-80 insulins in the US during the 1970s and 1980s to reduce syringe mix-ups. Some countries still use U-40 insulin, and travelers using the wrong syringe can receive the wrong dose. "U-100" is a manufacturer label term and is accepted even though "U" for units is on The Joint Commission "Do Not Use" list.
