1. Plain text file
Technology & Computing · File Format Abbreviations
File containing only unformatted characters, with no fonts, images or styling, readable by virtually every program and device. Notes, logs, README files and configuration files are often plain text.
Example: Paste the license key into a TXT file so you don't lose it.
The appearance of a TXT file depends on the program displaying it, and correct display depends on its character encoding, nowadays usually UTF-8. Windows traditionally ends lines with a carriage return and line feed (CRLF), while macOS and Linux use a line feed alone (LF), which can make files look jumbled in old editors. Windows Notepad and macOS TextEdit both edit plain text.
2. Text
Texting & Internet Slang · Texting and Chat Abbreviations
Shortens "text" as noun or verb, as in "txt me" or "got ur txt." A product of SMS-era spelling, when vowels were dropped to save characters.
Example: Txt me the address when you get there, I'll follow.
Also the standard file extension for plain-text documents on computers, as in "readme.txt," which is a separate, technical sense. As slang it now looks a little dated, since most people type "text" in full.
