1. Linear foot

Units & Measurements · US Customary and Imperial Unit Abbreviations

Length in feet along a material regardless of its width, the pricing unit for trim, molding, fencing, gutters, countertops and cabinets. A fence quoted at $35 per LF costs $3,500 for 100 feet.

Example: Base cabinets run about $250 per LF installed in mid-range kitchens.

Also written lin ft or LFT, and called "running foot" in some trades. Unlike square feet, linear feet ignore depth or height, which can make prices hard to compare between suppliers. Construction estimators use LF on takeoffs together with SF and CY.

2. Left fielder

Sports · Baseball Abbreviations

Outfielder who covers left field, position number 7. Because many right-handed hitters pull the ball to left, the position sees many hits, though it requires the weakest arm of the outfield spots.

Example: The LF climbed the wall to rob a home run in the eighth.

Fenway Park's 37-foot Green Monster makes left field there a unique assignment; Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski both played it. In stat tables LF can also mean left field as a location.

3. Lightface (lf)

Writing & Everyday · Proofreading and Correction Mark Abbreviations

Instructs that text wrongly set in bold be changed to lightface, the normal weight of a typeface. It is the counterpart of bf on proofs.

Example: The page number in the running head came out bold, so the proofreader marked it lf.

Lightface simply means the regular, non-bold weight of a type family. Modern style sheets rarely use the term, preferring "regular" or "normal weight." Its appearance on proofs is a sign of traditional typesetting workflows in book and journal publishing.
