NLCS stands for National League Championship Series, a baseball abbreviation.
Best-of-seven playoff series that decides the National League pennant. The winner advances to the World Series against the American League champion.
Example: After sweeping the NLCS, the team waited nearly a week for the World Series to begin.
Usage notes
Began in 1969 and expanded from best-of-five to best-of-seven in 1985. The pennant winner receives the Warren C. Giles Trophy, named for a former NL president. Before 1969 the team with the best regular-season record simply won the pennant, apart from occasional tiebreaker playoffs.
