1. Line of business
Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations
Group of related products or services that a company manages and reports on as a distinct area, such as retail banking, commercial lending and wealth management within one bank. The term also describes the business-facing side of an organization as opposed to IT or corporate functions.
Example: IT will build the dashboard, but each LOB owner must sign off on the metrics it shows.
Common in banking, insurance and enterprise IT, where "LOB applications" are the core systems that run day-to-day operations. In insurance, line of business also means a class of coverage, such as auto, homeowners or workers' compensation.
2. Loss of balance
Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations
Therapy and nursing term for an episode in which a patient becomes unsteady and would fall without correcting or being helped. Notes record how many LOBs occurred and whether the patient self-corrected.
Example: Two LOB during turns requiring Min A to recover; recommend walker.
Distinguishing self-corrected LOB from those needing help shows balance progress. Frequent LOBs during therapy are a key reason for recommending supervision at home. Near falls are often recorded as LOB.
3. Left on base
Sports · Baseball Abbreviations
Runners stranded on base when an inning ends, counted for the team and for the batter who made the final out. High LOB totals point to missed scoring chances.
Example: The Mets went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and had 11 LOB.
Pitchers' LOB% (strand rate) measures how many baserunners they keep from scoring and tends to regress toward about 72 percent. Box scores list team LOB at the bottom of the batting section.
