KRI stands for Key risk indicator, a management & strategy abbreviation.
Metric that signals rising exposure to a particular risk before it turns into a loss, such as staff turnover in a critical team, overdue audit findings or system downtime. Risk managers set thresholds for each KRI so that breaches trigger escalation.
Example: The KRI for vendor concentration turned red after a single supplier passed 40 percent of our spend.
Usage notes
KRIs are a standard tool of enterprise risk management and are widely used in banking, where operational-risk frameworks rely on them. Unlike KPIs, which track performance against goals, KRIs track the likelihood or impact of something going wrong. Thresholds are commonly shown as green, amber and red bands.
