1. Impression

Medical · Medical Documentation Abbreviations

Heading for the clinician's summary interpretation of findings, used in radiology reports, specialist consults and some progress notes. It states the most likely diagnosis or conclusion.

Example: CXR Imp: right lower lobe consolidation consistent with pneumonia.

In radiology reports the impression is the bottom-line conclusion, often the only part referring clinicians read. Some notes write "Impression/Plan" or "Imp/Plan" in place of an assessment and plan. Writing in full avoids confusion with imperial units in other fields.

2. Imperial (imp)

Units & Measurements · US Customary and Imperial Unit Abbreviations

Label for units of the British imperial system, established by the Weights and Measures Act 1824, used to separate them from US units of the same name. It appears as imp gal, imp pt or imp fl oz in conversion tables, car specifications and older British recipes.

Example: Fuel economy is 52 mpg (imp), which works out to about 43 mpg in US gallons.

The imperial gallon was defined as the volume of 10 pounds of water, making it about 20 percent larger than the US gallon. Imperial and US units agree for length and weight but not for volume. Canada and Australia used imperial measures before going metric in the 1970s. UK sources also write UK gal for the same unit.
