1. Subjective well-being
Science & Engineering · Psychology Abbreviations
Scientific term for how people evaluate their own lives, combining life satisfaction with the balance of positive and negative emotions they experience. SWB is the main outcome measure in happiness research and national well-being statistics.
Example: SWB rose sharply with income at low levels but leveled off among higher earners in the survey.
Psychologist Ed Diener, nicknamed "Dr. Happiness," defined the concept in 1984 and created the five-item Satisfaction with Life Scale in 1985. The UN's World Happiness Report ranks countries using a life-evaluation measure related to SWB.
2. Short wheelbase
Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations
Version of a vehicle with the shorter of two or more available distances between axles, giving a tighter turning circle and easier parking at the cost of interior or cargo space.
Example: For city deliveries we chose the SWB Transit because it fits in a standard parking space.
Off-road vehicles such as the two-door Jeep Wrangler and Land Rover Defender 90 use short wheelbases for agility over obstacles. SWB vans are cheaper and easier to maneuver. Spec sheets list the actual wheelbase length in inches or millimeters.
3. Sea waybill
Business & Finance · Logistics, Supply Chain & Trade Abbreviations
Non-negotiable ocean transport document that names the consignee, who can collect the cargo without presenting an original, making it faster and simpler than a bill of lading when no financing or sale in transit is involved.
Example: We ship to our own subsidiary on an SWB, so there's no paperwork to courier.
Because it is not a document of title, an SWB is unsuitable for letter-of-credit transactions that require transferable title.
