TPMS stands for Tire pressure monitoring system, an automotive abbreviation.
System that warns the driver, usually with a horseshoe-shaped amber light, when one or more tires are significantly underinflated. US rules require it on all new passenger vehicles and trigger the warning at 25 percent below the recommended pressure.
Example: The TPMS light comes on every cold morning until the tires warm up.
Usage notes
Required by the TREAD Act of 2000, passed after deadly rollovers involving Ford Explorers with Firestone tires, and phased in through the 2008 model year. Direct systems use sensors in each wheel, whose batteries last about five to ten years; indirect systems infer pressure from wheel speed through the ABS sensors. Cold weather lowers tire pressure about 1 psi for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
