TDI stands for Turbocharged direct injection, an automotive abbreviation.
Volkswagen Group's designation for its turbocharged diesel engines, widely sold in Golfs, Jettas, Passats and Audis. TDI engines delivered high torque and excellent fuel economy, often above 40 mpg on the highway.
Example: My 2012 Jetta TDI was part of the buyback, so I traded it in for a hybrid.
Usage notes
Audi launched the first TDI in 1989 in the Audi 100. In September 2015 the US Environmental Protection Agency revealed that Volkswagen had installed "defeat device" software on about 11 million diesel cars worldwide to cheat emissions tests, a scandal known as Dieselgate. VW stopped selling diesel cars in the US and paid more than $30 billion in fines, settlements and buybacks.
