SR-22 stands for SR-22 certificate of financial responsibility, a driving abbreviation also used in business.
Form filed by an auto insurer with a state motor vehicle agency to prove that a high-risk driver carries at least the minimum required liability insurance. States commonly require an SR-22 after a DUI, driving uninsured or repeated serious violations, typically for three years.
Example: After the DUI, the court ordered an SR-22 for three years, and my premium doubled.
Usage notes
An SR-22 is not insurance itself but a certificate attached to a policy; if the policy lapses, the insurer notifies the state and the license may be suspended. The name comes from the form number. Drivers without a car can buy a non-owner SR-22 policy. Florida and Virginia also use the stricter FR-44.
