REAL ID stands for REAL ID-compliant identification, a driving abbreviation.
US federal standard for state driver's licenses and ID cards, created by the REAL ID Act of 2005 after the 9/11 Commission recommended secure identification. Since May 7, 2025, travelers need a REAL ID-compliant card or other accepted ID, such as a passport, to board domestic flights.
Example: Look for the star in the corner of your license; that means it's a REAL ID.
Usage notes
Compliant cards are usually marked with a star. Obtaining one requires documents proving identity, Social Security number and residence. Enforcement was postponed repeatedly over nearly two decades before taking effect in 2025. The REAL ID is not a national ID card, and states continue to issue non-compliant licenses for driving.
