CategoriesTransportation & Travel

RTOR stands for Right turn on red, a driving abbreviation.

Rule allowing drivers to turn right at a red light after coming to a full stop and yielding to pedestrians and traffic, unless a sign prohibits it. All 50 US states have allowed it since 1980.

Example: No RTOR at this intersection, so wait for the green even if the road looks clear.

Usage notes

The 1975 Energy Policy and Conservation Act pushed states to permit it to save fuel. New York City is a major exception, prohibiting right turns on red unless a sign permits them. Several cities have recently debated bans to protect pedestrians and cyclists. Left turn on red from one one-way street onto another is allowed in many states.
