UIM
Stands forUnderinsured motorist coverage
CategoriesTransportation & Travel

UIM stands for Underinsured motorist coverage, a driving abbreviation also used in business.

Auto insurance that pays when an at-fault driver has insurance but not enough to cover the victim's injuries. UIM fills the gap between the other driver's liability limits and the actual damages.

Example: The other driver only had $25,000 in coverage, so my UIM paid the rest of the hospital bills.

Usage notes

Because state minimum liability limits are often low, such as $25,000 per person, UIM protects against serious injuries caused by minimally insured drivers. It is usually sold alongside UM coverage. Rules on how UIM limits stack across multiple vehicles vary by state.
