SBRT stands for Stereotactic body radiation therapy, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.
Highly precise radiation that delivers very high doses to small tumors outside the brain in one to five sessions, using image guidance and motion management. It is used for early-stage lung cancer in patients who cannot undergo surgery and for limited metastases.
Example: Medically inoperable 1.8 cm peripheral NSCLC: SBRT 54 Gy in 3 fractions.
Usage notes
Also called stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR). Local control rates for small peripheral lung cancers are high, making it the standard for patients unfit for surgery. The SABR-COMET trial (2019) suggested that treating all sites in oligometastatic disease improved survival. The cranial equivalent is stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS).
