SABR stands for Society for American Baseball Research, a baseball abbreviation.
Membership organization of baseball researchers, historians and statisticians, founded in Cooperstown, New York, in 1971. Its name gave rise to the term "sabermetrics" for the analytical study of baseball.
Example: Her SABR presentation traced Negro Leagues statistics now accepted by MLB.
Usage notes
Bill James coined "sabermetrics" from the society's initials in 1980. SABR's research contributed to MLB's 2020 decision to recognize the Negro Leagues of 1920 to 1948 as major leagues, and their statistics were added to official records in 2024. Pronounced "saber".
