1. Run batted in
Sports · Baseball Abbreviations
Credit given to a batter when his plate appearance causes a run to score, through a hit, sacrifice, walk with the bases loaded or other means, except when the run scores on an error or a double play. RBI totals are a traditional measure of run production.
Example: The first baseman drove in four runs, giving him 99 RBI with a week to play.
Made an official MLB statistic in 1920, though researchers have reconstructed earlier totals. Hank Aaron holds the career record with 2,297, and Hack Wilson's 191 in 1930 is the single-season mark. The plural is written RBI or RBIs, and some style guides prefer "RBIs"; it is pronounced "R-B-I" or "ribbie". Analysts note RBI depends heavily on teammates getting on base.
2. Reserve Bank of India
Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations · also used in government
India's central bank, established in 1935 and nationalized in 1949, which sets monetary policy through its Monetary Policy Committee, regulates banks, manages the rupee and issues currency. It targets consumer price inflation of 4 percent within a band of 2 to 6 percent.
Example: The RBI cut the repo rate by 25 basis points and shifted its stance to neutral.
Headquartered in Mumbai, the RBI uses the repo rate as its main policy rate. It also runs payment systems such as NEFT and RTGS and regulates the National Payments Corporation of India, which operates UPI. Indian banknotes carry the governor's signature and a promise to pay the bearer.
