PV2 stands for Private (E-2), a US Army rank abbreviation.
Second enlisted grade in the Army, pay grade E-2, marked by a single chevron. Most soldiers reach it automatically after six months of service, so many hold it while finishing advanced individual training or arriving at their first unit.
Example: Congratulations to PV2 Holt, promoted this morning at the company formation.
Usage notes
Spoken as "private two" or simply "private"; in conversation the grade is not distinguished from E-1. Soldiers call the lone chevron a "mosquito wing." Commanders can waive part of the time-in-service requirement, allowing promotion after four months. The equivalent E-2 grades are Seaman Apprentice in the Navy, Airman in the Air Force and Private First Class in the Marine Corps.
