First of the Army's sergeant grades, pay grade E-5, worn as three chevrons. Sergeants usually lead a team or small section and answer for the training, discipline and welfare of junior soldiers; promotion is semi-centralized, with points for schooling, weapons qualification, fitness and awards.
Example: SGT Alvarez signed for the night-vision goggles and issued them to her team.
Under the Army's STEP policy a soldier must complete the Basic Leader Course before pinning on SGT. The word comes from Old French "sergent," from Latin "serviens," serving. AP style writes Sgt. before a name, and the Marine Corps and Space Force use Sgt for their own E-5s. Sergeants are addressed as "Sergeant," never "sir" or "ma'am."
