PIRLS stands for Progress in International Reading Literacy Study, a standardized test abbreviation.
IEA study of reading achievement among fourth graders, conducted every five years since 2001 in dozens of countries. It measures reading for literary experience and reading to acquire information, along with surveys of home and school reading environments.
Example: Singapore and Ireland were among the top performers in PIRLS 2021.
Usage notes
Fourth grade was chosen because it marks the shift from learning to read to reading to learn. The 2021 cycle moved largely to a digital format called digitalPIRLS. Results are reported on a scale centered at 500, the original international average.
