OLSAT stands for Otis-Lennon School Ability Test, a standardized test abbreviation.
Pearson ability test of verbal and nonverbal reasoning for students from kindergarten through grade 12, used by many districts to identify gifted students. New York City long used it, together with the NNAT, to admit young children to gifted and talented programs.
Example: The district screens all second graders with the OLSAT for its gifted pull-out program.
Usage notes
The current edition, OLSAT 8, reports a School Ability Index with a mean of 100. Critics argue that early ability testing favors children whose families can afford test preparation, a debate that led New York City to stop using it in 2021. The test descends from group intelligence tests designed by Arthur Otis.
