Phlm. stands for Philemon, a Bible book abbreviation.
Paul's shortest letter, a single chapter of 25 verses, asking Philemon to welcome back Onesimus, a runaway slave who had become a Christian, "not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved" (verse 16).
Example: Because Phlm. has only one chapter, citations give only the verse number, as in Phlm. 16.
Usage notes
SBL and Catholic forms use Phlm, while Chicago's traditional style uses Philem. Do not confuse it with Phil. (Philippians). The letter has been read both in support of and against slavery throughout history.
