1. Mark

Religion · Bible Book Abbreviations

Shortest of the four Gospels, 16 chapters, and according to most scholars the earliest, written around AD 65–70. Tradition holds that John Mark wrote it from the preaching of Peter, and its fast-paced narrative repeatedly uses the word "immediately".

Example: The disciples' fear during the storm is told in Mk 4:35–41.

SBL and Chicago's traditional list leave Mark unabbreviated, while Catholic Bibles and Chicago's short forms use Mk; Mar. appears in some older indexes. The earliest manuscripts end at 16:8, so the "longer ending" (16:9–20) is printed in brackets or with notes in most modern Bibles.

2. North Macedonia (MK)

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

North Macedonia kept the code MK, from Makedonija, when it changed its name from the Republic of Macedonia in February 2019 under the Prespa Agreement with Greece. Skopje is the capital and MKD the alpha-3 code.

Example: Shipments to MK still show the old name in some outdated address databases.

The name change cleared the way for NATO membership in 2020. Mother Teresa was born in Skopje in 1910.

3. Machinery Technician (MK)

Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations

Coast Guard engineering rating responsible for the diesel engines, propulsion, refrigeration and auxiliary machinery of cutters and small boats, and for maintaining equipment at stations ashore.

Example: MK2 Ortega kept the 47-foot motor lifeboat's engines running through the overnight rescue.

MKs are the Coast Guard's counterpart to Navy enginemen and machinist's mates, and many qualify as boat engineers who crew small boats on search-and-rescue cases. Senior MKs often serve as engineering petty officers responsible for a station's entire boat fleet.
