Matt. stands for Matthew, a Bible book abbreviation.
First book of the New Testament and first of the four Gospels, 28 chapters, traditionally attributed to the apostle Matthew, a former tax collector. It contains the Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5–7), including the Beatitudes and the Lord's Prayer, and ends with the Great Commission.
Example: The Beatitudes in Matt. 5:3–12 begin "Blessed are the poor in spirit."
Usage notes
SBL writes Matt, while Catholic Bibles and Chicago's short forms use Mt, the form most often seen in Bible apps and devotional writing. Matthew quotes the Old Testament more often than any other Gospel. Most scholars believe it drew on Mark's Gospel.
