Phil. stands for Philippians, a Bible book abbreviation.

Warm four-chapter letter from Paul, written from prison, to the church at Philippi, the first church he founded in Europe. It includes an early hymn about Christ humbling himself (2:5–11) and the verse "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (4:13).

Usage notes

SBL and short forms use Phil. Do not confuse it with Phlm. (Philemon), which Chicago's traditional style writes as Philem. Joy and rejoicing are recurring themes despite Paul's imprisonment.
