PERT stands for Program Evaluation and Review Technique, a project management abbreviation.
Network scheduling technique that estimates activity durations from three values, optimistic, most likely and pessimistic, to model uncertainty and the probability of finishing by a given date.
Example: Using PERT, the test phase comes out at (4 + 4×6 + 14) / 6, or 7 weeks.
Usage notes
Developed in 1958 by the US Navy's Special Projects Office with Booz Allen Hamilton for the Polaris missile program. The classic weighted average is (O + 4M + P) / 6. A "PERT chart" now often means any network diagram of tasks and dependencies.
