NIMS stands for National Incident Management System, an emergency services abbreviation.
US federal framework, issued by FEMA under a 2003 presidential directive, that standardizes how agencies at every level manage incidents, including the Incident Command System, resource management and communications. It applies to all hazards.
Example: All our officers have completed NIMS training courses IS-100 and IS-700.
Usage notes
NIMS was first released in 2004 and updated in 2017. It promotes plain-language radio communication rather than agency-specific codes during multi-agency incidents. Federal preparedness grants require NIMS adoption.
