PIO stands for Public information officer, an emergency services abbreviation.
Official responsible for communicating with the media and public during an emergency or for an agency in general, issuing press releases, holding briefings and running social media.
Example: The fire department PIO will give an update on the warehouse fire at 3 p.m.
Usage notes
Under the Incident Command System, the PIO is part of the command staff, reporting directly to the incident commander. Several agency PIOs may work together in a joint information center. Police departments also employ PIOs for routine announcements.
