NG911 stands for Next Generation 911, an emergency services abbreviation.
Internet protocol-based upgrade of 911 systems that allows call centers to receive texts, photos, video and data and to transfer calls and information between centers more easily. States are converting gradually.
Example: Once the county finishes the NG911 upgrade, callers will be able to send video of a crash.
Usage notes
Traditional 911 runs on legacy telephone networks designed in the 1960s and 1970s. NG911 also improves routing based on precise location. Standards are developed by NENA, and funding has been a major obstacle.
