NGSS stands for Next Generation Science Standards, a K-12 education abbreviation.
K-12 science standards released in 2013, based on the National Research Council's 2012 Framework for K-12 Science Education. They combine science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts and disciplinary core ideas in "three-dimensional" performance expectations.
Example: The unit meets NGSS performance expectation MS-LS1-6 on photosynthesis.
Usage notes
About 20 states and Washington, DC adopted NGSS directly, and many others built similar standards from the same framework. The standards were developed by 26 lead states with Achieve, a nonprofit. They put more emphasis on engineering design and evidence-based argument than earlier standards.
