CategoriesGovernment & Politics

NSLP stands for National School Lunch Program, a public program abbreviation also used in education.

Federally assisted meal program that provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children in public and nonprofit private schools. Children from households below 130 percent of the poverty line get free meals, and those up to 185 percent pay a reduced price.

Example: Our district reimburses cafeterias for every NSLP meal that meets the nutrition standards.

Usage notes

President Harry Truman signed the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act in 1946, citing national security after many World War II draftees were rejected for malnutrition. Schools in high-poverty areas can serve free meals to all students under the Community Eligibility Provision. The School Breakfast Program operates alongside it.
