LRE stands for Least restrictive environment, a K-12 education abbreviation.
IDEA requirement that students with disabilities be educated with nondisabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate, with removal to separate classes or schools only when necessary. Every IEP must explain the extent to which a student will not participate in general education.
Example: The IEP team decided the LRE for him is the general education classroom with a full-time aide.
Usage notes
Districts must offer a continuum of placements, from general classes with support to resource rooms, self-contained classrooms, special schools and home or hospital instruction. Most students with IEPs spend at least 80 percent of the day in general classes. LRE decisions are made individually, not by disability category.
