CategoriesEducation & Academia

K-8 stands for Kindergarten through 8th grade, a K-12 education abbreviation.

School or program serving kindergarten through eighth grade in a single building, combining elementary and middle school. Many districts and Catholic dioceses use the K-8 model to avoid a separate middle school transition.

Example: Our neighborhood K-8 sends most graduates to the magnet high school.

Usage notes

Supporters argue that keeping young adolescents in a K-8 school reduces the academic and social dip often seen after moving to middle school. Some districts converted middle schools to K-8 campuses in the 2000s. Many charter schools also follow this grade configuration.
