1. Project-based learning

Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations

Teaching approach in which students learn by working over an extended period on a complex question or real-world project, ending with a public product or presentation. Schools in networks such as High Tech High and New Tech Network organize much of their curriculum around it.

Example: Our PBL unit had students design a rain garden for the school courtyard and present it to the city council.

PBLWorks, formerly the Buck Institute for Education, publishes a widely used "Gold Standard PBL" model. Critics warn that projects without careful design can leave gaps in foundational skills. Not to be confused with problem-based learning, which shares the abbreviation.

2. Problem-based learning

Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations

Student-centered approach in which small groups learn by working through complex, open-ended problems, identifying what they need to learn and researching it with a tutor's guidance. It originated in medical education and is used in schools, engineering programs and law schools.

Example: First-year medical students meet twice a week in PBL tutorials built around patient cases.

McMaster University's medical school pioneered the method in the late 1960s, and schools such as Maastricht University adopted it throughout their curricula. Problem-based learning usually centers on shorter problems than project-based learning. Research shows benefits for problem-solving and retention, with mixed effects on factual knowledge.
