NDAA stands for National Defense Authorization Act, a political abbreviation also used in the military.
Annual law that sets policy and authorizes spending levels for the Defense Department and the national security programs of the Energy Department, covering topics from troop pay and weapons programs to cybersecurity. It has been enacted every year for more than six decades.
Example: The pay raise for service members is included in this year's NDAA.
Usage notes
An authorization bill sets policy and spending ceilings; the money itself comes from separate appropriations acts. Because the NDAA is treated as must-pass, unrelated provisions are often attached, such as the Corporate Transparency Act in the fiscal 2021 version. Each version is named for its fiscal year, as in "FY2026 NDAA".
