Lt. Gov. stands for Lieutenant Governor, a political abbreviation also used in general use.
Second-ranking executive official in most US states, who succeeds the governor in case of vacancy and in many states presides over the state senate. Some are elected on a joint ticket with the governor, others separately.
Example: Lt. Gov. Brooks will serve as acting governor while the governor is abroad.
Usage notes
Arizona, Maine, New Hampshire, Oregon and Wyoming have no lieutenant governor, so succession runs to another official such as the secretary of state or senate president. The office's power varies widely: in Texas the lieutenant governor largely controls the state senate's agenda. AP style uses "Lt. Gov." before a name.
