MSN stands for Master of Science in Nursing, a degree abbreviation also used in medicine.
Graduate nursing degree for registered nurses that prepares them for advanced practice as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists or nurse-midwives, or for roles in nursing education and leadership. Programs usually take two to three years, including several hundred supervised clinical hours for advanced practice tracks.
Example: She finished her MSN in family practice and passed the national nurse practitioner certification exam.
Usage notes
Written M.S.N. Nurse anesthesia programs no longer admit master's students: since 2022, accredited programs must be doctoral. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing has long urged moving all advanced practice education to the DNP, but the MSN remains a valid entry route for nurse practitioners.
