MSIX stands for MSIX app package, a file format abbreviation.
Microsoft packaging format introduced in 2018 that installs Windows apps in a lightweight container, allowing clean uninstallation without leftover files or registry entries. It covers both Microsoft Store apps and traditional desktop software.
Example: The vendor now ships an MSIX, so the app updates itself and uninstalls cleanly.
Usage notes
MSIX combines features of the older MSI and AppX (UWP) formats. Packages must be digitally signed, and they write to a virtualized view of the file system and registry. In virtual-desktop environments, "MSIX app attach" mounts applications on demand instead of installing them into each image. Adoption has been gradual because some legacy installers need repackaging.
